BSC Campus Relations Intern

Early in the year, I became interested in some of the projects the Black Student Commission planned to focus on, so I applied as an intern and got the role of the Campus Relations Intern. The team is great, and I'm excited to contribute some of my prior skills and experience to BSC projects. As a part of my role, I'm also spending more time in student senate, and I'm enjoying having a greater connection to the student leader/advocate community.

Health Disparities Research Group

I joined a Phd candidate lead research group based on racial health disparities to expand on my research experience and knowledge. There are plans to go through the whole research process from scratch, and we've left off the quarter with a focus on cultural/ethnic differences in birth control usage and perceptions among college students. I think this will be a great experience that will help have a more concrete understanding of research.

National Parks

My National Parks class was phenomenal! We went to the Mt. Rainier National Park, Olympic National Park, and North Cascades National Park. This was my first experience backpacking, and it was uncomfortable, but fantastic at the same time. I loved our little group and had a lot of fun on our weekend trips. I think I may be more of a day hiker and explorer, but I definitely appreciated the experience and the knowledge of surviving off of whatever you can carry on your back.

Health Sciences Student Assistant

Teri stole me from the HUB this quarter, and I started working as a student assistant in the Health Sciences Minority Student Program. I think this has been a very good opportunity for me. Though, I didn't always take advantage of it, working in the office gave me scheduled time to get schoolwork done and meet graduate level health sciences students in Nursing or Dentistry. I look forward to sticking around the office this year.

Wellness Day

The primary passion project that I took up as a BSC intern was a Wellness day initiative. I started this initiative with an interest in alleviating student mental health in Spring quarter through a non-instructional holiday. Discussions with the registrar and stakeholders have provided great insight, so far. A huge success is that this legislation passed the ASUW senate in Winter 2023.

Salsa Club

I joined Salsa club as a member, and I really really like it. Salsa and bachata have been a great creative outlet for me. All the members and officers are great company and really inspirational. I look forward to Salsa club becoming a regular part of my schedule.

Wellness Day

This was a pivotal quarter for my Wellness Day initiative. After passing ASUW senate, the resolution passed GPSS, and it also passed the Faculty Senate with the revision to keep Wellness day as a regular instructional day. I plan to keep connected to the stakeholders so that we can have some sort of Wellness day in Spring 2024.

Salsa Club

I offiicially became a Salsa club officer in Spring 2023, and I enjoy the extra opportunities to connect to other officers and members. Salsa club definitely feels like a small community that I see every week for 6-10 hours a week.

Externship

My research externship in 2023 was amazing. It started at Kennedy Kreiger in Baltimore, went to UC Davis in Sacramento, and ended at the CDC in Atlanta. I left this externship extremely confident in the importance of research as a part of my future and career.

MCAT

Studying for the MCAT has been fundamentally difficult in creating study schedules and building test endurance. I took my first in September and I hope to take my second and last in April!

D.C.

I traveled to Washington D.C. this summer on the Black Opportunity Fund Grant to look at medical schools and pursue education through the Smithsonian exhibits. Highlights for me were seeing my cousins, walking the boardwalk and the capitol, and the Museums of Natural History and  African American History. Of the medical schools I saw, I'd definitely apply to Howard and possibly Georgetown, but no George Washington.
