Riverways Tutoring @ Dearborn

This fall I also started volunteering at Dearborn Park International Elementary School through the Riverways Partnership with the Seattle Public School district. I work as a volunteer aid/tutor in one of the kindergarten classes and help small groups practice their letter-sound recognition and CVC word-formation. I really enjoy the job, its always amazing to see the smile on a kid's face after reading his or her first words.  The photo above is a dinosaur that I drew for one of the thank you cards that I made with them because they especially liked the T-rex.

This role is my Service experiential learning activity completed in Winter quarter, and I continued tutoring all the way through 2020-2021 School Year.

Elm Hall Council

At the beginning of this year I decided to apply to hall council, and I became the Residential Community Standards Committee Representative for Elm Hall. As a RCSC Rep, I learned about the student conduct process within HFS and I worked with other Committee members to operate Community Living Workshops for individuals working the conduct process. I was part of Elm Hall Council for the whole 2020-2021 school year and picked up new responsibilities along the way.

This role doubles as my Leadership experiential learning activity completed in the Spring. This photo is an artifact from one of our Monday Hall Council meetings as we all pose for a photo.

Work for King County Elections

November 2020 was the first Presidential election that I voted in! Besides voting, I worked with King County Elections as a dropbox attendant on the day of and before the election. Most of my time was spent telling people to check the back of their ballots for signatures, replacing ruined envelopes, assisting with ballot drop-off, and passing out the "I voted" stickers. It was seeing how excited people were to participate in democracy and I hope to try out a different position with King County elections in the future.

Certified Nursing Assistant Training

In November 2020 I got my NAR (Nursing Assistant Registration) and I began my state-required class time to prepare for my CNA testing and license. During the training, I learned the daily tasks of CNAs and received extensive information on the handling of patients with HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases.

UW Food Pantry

UW Food Pantry was something I walked by almost daily on campus. Winter quarter, I decided to join the UW Food Pantry as a volunteer. I've done a bit everything there. I prepared a lot of orders, stocked shelves, welcomed guests, and through a collaboration with my Hall Council, I had the opportunity to organize a food drive. For me, I enjoy being able to give my time to the UW community and it's a good way to set time aside for something I enjoy doing.

Hall Council Food Drive

Our Hall Council Food Drive was one of my best projects this quarter. As a Food Pantry volunteer and Hall Council member, I organized and coordinated a Hall Council Food Drive in my community. Our council marketed the event as an inter-floor competition and as a community, Elm Hall collected around 100 lbs of food.

SHPEP & KP Virtual Rounds Acceptance

In Fall 2020, I applied to the Summer Health Professions Education Program with the recommendation of Dr. Hannah Jordt. I applied to 1 medical program, 1 public health program outside of the state, and to UW's Public Health program. I was initially wait-listed for UW SHPEP Public Health, but I was very excited to later accept a position for the Summer cohort. In Winter quarter I also applied to Kaiser Permanente's Virtual Rounds Program and I was accepted into the spring Cohort.

First CNA Job

After completing my CNA training program and filing my Nursing Assitant Registration with WA Department of Health, I applied and started working at Ballard Center Longterm Care and Rehabilitation facility to gain employment, experience, and to meet my 50 hours of state training before CNA testing. Without a car, and still in school, I initially only worked 2 shifts a week on Saturdays and Sundays and I had to Uber to work and bus home.
This picture is my 2nd day of work and the day that I got my 1st Covid-19 vaccine (Pfizer gang btw).

RCSA

Winter quarter I was encouraged by my roommate to apply to the Residential Community Students' Association's Executive Board. I felt the most excited about the Director of Partnerships and Recognition position, so I applied and interviewed for it, and I got the job! I'm on RCSA's executive board for the 2021-2022 school year. In the photo with me is also Frank (Finance and Admin), Grace (President), Blake (Government Affairs), and Chloe (Communications). We're the dream team!

Babysitting

In Winter quarter, in between jobs, I started babysitting regularly for 2 families with young girls. This was another experience that I was curious about, and ended up enjoying more than I expected. Kids are fun to hang out with and they make interesting conversationalists. Babysitting during school and my other jobs was a good way for me to schedule in breaks from school work and work work so that I could have some fun.

Simple Solutions

In Spring 2021 I founded the Simple Solutions RSO along with 4 other administrators. The purpose of our RSO was to gather together and make collective efforts to combat misinformation, support mutual aid efforts, and participate in activism on campus. Our team had some great conversations and created an educational Instagram post about Covid-19 vaccinations. Unfortunately, due to our schedules and other commitments, our team was not able to continue working and suspended the organization permanently in Autumn 2021.

Elm Hall Council: RCSA Rep & DEI Committee

By Spring quarter we had some vacancies in our Hall Council and I was one of a few members who took on an extra role to compensate. I became a proxy Residential Community Student Association Representative for Elm Hall and mostly participated in Consitution revision and a DEI committee Climate Survey.

Kaiser Permanente Virtual Rounds

In Winter quarter I was accepted into Kaiser Permanente's Virtual Rounds program. During Spring Quarter, I had the opportunity to attend interviews of Cardiologists, EMTs, ER Physicians, Obestricians, Family Medicine Physicians, and others. It was inspiring and informative learning about specialties I'd never studied before and hearing about all the different paths that each person took to Medical School. I definitely came away from this experience more optimistic that Med School is something that I can achieve.

SHPEP

The Summer Health Professionals Education Program was a fun way to spend the Summer! We got an introduction to Biology, Biostatistics, and Population Health. My program was focused on Public Health, and I had the opportunity to learn about Careers, pathways, and programs that I hadn't heard about before. I appreciated all the amazing speakers that shared their experiences with us.

CNA License

Summer was a great opportunity to continue my work as a CNA at Ballard Center and complete my required state testing and hours for my license. I ended my position in September and it will most likely be my last time as a CNA. But the experience was just as worthwhile as I thought it would be. I learned a lot about patient care in my role and I will definitely miss some of my favorite patients. Also, personally and professionally, I learned to be more vocal about my needs and the needs of my patients. Overall, I accumulated 300 hours in this position from February to September.

Georgia

It was a busy Summer, but I still took some time to relax and have a vacation. I originally planned to visit my family in Georgia the Summer of 2020, but that plan was pushed back to 2021. I visited a family from both sides, enjoyed the warmth, fished on a lake, swam with my cousins, ate a lot of good food, watched the Olympics, and did a whole lot of nothing. This vacation was a great break and a good reminder to make time for the things I enjoy.
